Introduction
The kidney is generally ovoid or “kidney bean” shaped.
The hilum is a deep vertical cleft through which the renal artery, vein, and pelvis exit the kidney.
The inner surface or lumenal surface is smooth.
The lateral surface is usually a smooth convexity by adulthood, with rounded upper and lower poles.
Bulges on the lateral surface of the kidneys, called fetal lobulations, are occasionally seen.
A “dromedary hump” is a normal variant of the lower pole of the left kidney and is a hump on the lower pole of the left kidney, secondary to downward pressure from spleen.
